HANDLING MONEY
Your older children will need to learn how to handle money. How much you can put in their hands depends on your financial resources, as well as your estimation of their maturity levels. If they can take on a small after-school job, that is a good learning tool. Babysitting for a neighbor, working at a grocery store, or doing yard work are among the neighborhood opportunities often available to teens.
If your son can do yard work within walking distance of your house, you can let him use the family mower. He should buy the gas and pay for any necessary repairs. Or negotiate a loan with him to buy a used mower from Craigslist, the newspaper classifieds, or a mower shop.
A teen who earns his own money has a sense of real world power. He will also have to learn about taxes and budgets and managing personal resources. That’s important, too.
